A hybrid cloud can offer tailor-made options for each business, enabling the customer to choose what they want to move to the cloud and what to keep in place, and decide which cloud services should be used for what purpose.

For those who do not know, the term “hybrid cloud” is one of those IT terms that makes normal evolutionary measures seem the right and most innovative to do. Cloud vendors, such as Amazon, Google and Microsoft, would like companies to terminate their internal data center and transfer all infrastructureto the cloud.

Change infrastructure

This data center strategy, called hyperconvergent, is a good approach for companies that are just starting out and feel no need to buy their own IT infrastructure. Products such as iCloud, Dropbox, Amazon and countless other SaaS and web-based services have been created as cloud-based products since day one, but that’s not how the rest of the world evolved.

Since the 1950s and in the mainframe era, companies have designed and operated their own IT infrastructures. Also, switching to the cloud is not a process that will happen overnight.

However, while companies like Amazon, Microsoft and others want this to happen, there are many reasons, including the cost of rewriting apps to work in a new environment that prevented companies from transitioning. This is because when a company buys storage servers, it expects them to last five years or more as they are depreciated in a similar period of time.

Migrating this storage to the cloud would mean cancelling equipment that is still counted as passive. Even if the cloud is cheaper, hardware is an unrecoverable cost, making it difficult to achieve a single financial impact.

Inevitably, what happens is that old systems that are still working remain on existing systems and new systems, or the expansion of existing systems, migrate to the cloud. In this case, customers get a hybrid cloud with some processes in the on-premises store and others in the cloud.

Why hybrid?

There are some good technical reasons for maintaining a hybrid cloud. Some processes require specialized or highly adjusted equipment to function properly. A good example would be video editing, where massive files are operated in real time. The bandwidth that must exist between storage and processing is so large that there is not a really good way to make it work in the cloud.
